Eagle Brand Pound Cake

The Beginning of Wisdom

‭Proverbs 1:7

This is a popular recipe that was often featured right on the can of the Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk, and I just had to try it!

Eagle Brand Pound Cake

4 sticks of softened butter (1lb)

2 cups of sugar

3 cups of flour

6 eggs

14oz can of Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk

2 tsp vanilla extract

Directions:

Cream butter until the consistency of mayonnaise.  Then add sugar and beat on medium high for 4-5 minutes until it is lighter in color and looks like fluffy sand.  Slow mixer to lowest setting and add eggs one at a time. Then add vanilla extract.  Slowly alternate adding flour and sweetened condensed milk. Beat on a low speed for 2-3 minutes—just until well blended.  Pour into a well-greased or lined 16-cup Angel food pan.  Bake in a preheated oven on 300 for 70-90 minutes.  Just until a toothpick comes out clean. Enjoy!

Devotional:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Proverbs 1:7 NRSV

Just like a great recipe, some of the best knowledge and wisdom is handed down over the years and over the generations. I want us to think about how we can make wiser choices, how do we draw from the well of wisdom.

Proverbs 1:7 says that the beginning of wisdom and knowledge begins with ‘fear of the Lord’.

We often hear this thing about the fear of the Lord.  And the word ‘fear’in our modern context is associated with being afraid.  It would lead us to think of the phrase ‘the fear of the Lord’ as being afraid of God.  That we do things for God out of fear.  Maybe we even believe in God out of fear.  The fear of punishment or divine judgment, something of that nature.

To really grasp this verse, we have to challenge that assumption.  Think of ‘the fear of the Lord’ as reverence.  As a posture that evokes humility.

So when Proverbs 1:7 says the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.  The beginning of wisdom is reverence.  The beginning of wisdom is humility. The beginning of wisdom is knowing who is the Wisest.  And the Wise One is the Lord.

And we will see in Proverbs that once we have a posture of reverence and humility, not only will we learn from God through the scriptures, that we can also learn from each other, from our elders, from our community.
